Nine drowned in separate mishaps

Nine people drowned and several went missing in two separate mishaps in Patna and Samastipur districts today. While six people including five children drowned and three others went missing in Patna district, three others drowned and as many 13 went missing when their boat capsized in Samastipur district.

Providing details about the drowning in Patna district, Fatuha deputy police superintendent Sunil Kumar said here that six people lost their lives and three others went missing when they were taking bath near the confluence point of Ganga and Punpun rivers in diara belt of Mastana Ghat under Fatuha police station area on the outskirts of the state capital.

He said they were taking bath near the confluence point to enjoy picnic during the weekend when the mishap took place. Local divers saved three children from drowning and were making efforts to trace the missing people.

Mr Kumar said the deceased had been identified as Sanju Devi (45), her daughter Chhoti Kumari (10), Aarti Kumari (12), Rajo Kumari (10), Gautam Kumar (10), Sahil Kumar (10). DSP said that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team had been pressed into service to trace missing people.

The rescued children had been admitted to a local government hospital in an unconscious condition. The bodies had been sent to Nalanda Medical College and Hospital for autopsy.

All the people are natives of Nohta village in the district, police added. According to a report from Samastipur, three women drowned and 13 others went missing when a boat capsized in the midstream of Bagmati river near Dharmpur Ghat (bank) under Hathauri police station area in the district.

Police said here that three women drowned when boat capsized suddenly in the midstream of river while it was ferrying 20 people from Dharmpur Ghat to Ratras village. Those who met their watery grave in the river had been identified as Rita Devi, Punam Devi and Nagina Devi.

Police said the local divers saved four people from drowning and all of them had been admitted to a local private hospital. Efforts are on to trace 13 missing people, police added.
