Agencies, New Delhi President Pranab Mukherjee today stressed the need to bring about a change in the mindset of the society to ensure that women are treated with dignity and respect and said the ordinance to make anti-rape laws more stringent was now ready for introduction in the upcoming Budget Session of Parliament.
The President, who inaugurated the 44th Conference of Governors at Rashtrapati Bhavan here, referring to the December 16 tragic gangrape of a Delhi paramedic, said the government had taken prompt action on the Justice Verma report for making anti-rape laws more stringent.
‘’The Government had taken prompt action on the recommendations made by Justice Verma Committee and the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance 2013 was now ready for introduction in Parliament in Budget Session,’’ the President said while calling upon the Governors to work towards improving security and welfare of women. He sought to remind the Governors that the conference was being held in the shadow of the unfortunate incident of brutal rape and death of a young woman in Delhi which had shaken the nation’s collective conscience.
