The Madhya Pradesh High Court on Monday strongly pulled up the state regime on a petition – taken up suo motu based on media reports – in the Bhopal gangrape case and sought action taken report within 15 days.

While hearing the petition concerning the gangrape of a civil service aspirant near to the Habibganj Railway Station in Bhopal on October 31, a division bench headed by Chief Justice Hemant Gupta expressed deep anguish over the government’s attitude.

The court took a serious note of the delay in the lodging of FIR and the victim’s medical examination. On the dispensation’s behalf, Attorney General Purushendra Kaurav presented details of action taken by the government so far.

He informed the court about the arrest of the four accused and the suspension of police officials who delayed in registering an FIR. He also presented details of the action taken by the Health Department against health officials concerned over the delay in medical examination. The court fixed the next hearing on November 27.

A student was gangraped for approximately three hours by four men while she was returning from a coaching class on October 31. She had a harrowing time getting her complaint lodged as she was compelled to run from one police station to another over non-agreement of jurisdiction.

A complaint was lodged eventually almost after 24 hours. Four accused were arrested in this connection. Three towns inspectors and two sub-inspectors have been suspended.

Besides, the Inspector General of Police (Bhopal Range) and the Railway Superintendent of Police and a City Superintendent of Police were removed from their posts.

The medical examination of the victim was done at the Sultania Janana Hospital. The first report mentioned sexual intercourse with consent. Besides, the ‘victim’ was mentioned as ‘accused’.

When the error came to notice, a fresh report was prepared by a senior doctor wherein the matter of gang rape was reported. Two doctors were suspended for negligence in the first medical report. A show-cause notice was issued to another doctor.

ASI suspended in rape case

Harda: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) has been suspended on the charge of pressuring a rape victim to enter into a compromise in this district headquarters, police said.

The victim – who is a nurse and a resident of Khandwa – complained that she had come to Harda for some work. On Saturday night, she was taken in a car by Imrat, an acquaintance, and his friend Harnarayan on the pretext of administering injection to his mother.

However, the culprits stopped the car near a farm at Nahadia village where Harnarayan held her on gunpoint, while Imrat sexually assaulted her.

The victim accused ASI Vijay Jaat of offering her Rs five lakh for withdrawing her complaint. He even threatened her with dire consequences on refusing to do so.

Harda Superintendent of Police Rajesh Kumar Singh said that the guilty police official has been suspended. A probe has been ordered into the incident. Meanwhile, the rape accused is absconding.
