The BJP’s prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi, the flagship of the saffron party’s electoral armada, today endeavoured to shoot the Congress below the waterline by questioning his archrival and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s ability to lead the nation.
“How will a son who is unable to manage Amethi parliamentary constituency govern the entire nation? Madam Sonia is begging for votes for Mr Gandhi in Amethi. She is saying that Indiraji gave her son Rajiv to Amethi and she has given her son Rahul to them. She is appealing to Amethi’s denizens to take care of him,” Mr Modi said. He addressed poll meetings in Bishrampur, Bilaspur and Durg.
Referring to the Congress President’s rally in Amethi yesterday, he said, “I am surprised as on the one hand, Ms Gandhi is imploring people to support Mr Gandhi in Amethi while on the other she claims that her son will guide the whole nation.”
Accusing the Congress of shedding crocodile tears over the issue of the fairer sex’s dignity and safety, Mr Modi said, “Every day media publish reports on sexual assault, gang-rape and murder of women in the national capital where there is a government run by the mother and her son.
However, the Congress itself has launched a nationwide campaign on the issue, which is only aimed at misleading womenfolk for garnering their votes.”
According to the Centre’s report on crime against women, the Gujarat Chief Minister said Congress-ruled states had the dubious distinction of occupying the first seven positions in the list of top ten states that registered the maximum cases of atrocities against the fairer sex. The three other states are also ruled by the Congress in alliance with other parties. Criticising Mr Gandhi for “lying to and misleading” the country on the women’s safety issue, Mr Modi said, “We can proudly say that no BJP-ruled states figure in that list.”
Recalling the Nirbhaya gang-rape that shook the nation, he said, “Everybody hailed the Centre’s effort when it created a Rs 1,000-crore fund for providing protection to women. However, the insensitive Congress should feel ashamed for failing to expend a single paisa from the Fund in the past year.”
Mr Modi added that a provision of another Rs 1,000 cr was made in the Centre’s interim budget for the Fund. Alleging that the United Progressive Alliance is running only on paper, the BJP leader said that the Government should furnish an account of its deeds and warned Mr Gandhi to stop misleading people.
