There is a saying “power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. It appears that this saying must have come in way of life in feudal era of kings. But it is not applicable or correct in the democratic era. World over many leaders who come to power in their countries were exemplanary honest who commanded high respect among the people and in history.
We in India can very easily say that Pandit Nehru, Sardar Patel, Maulana Azad, BC Roy, Mr Morarji Desai and many more were not corrupt while in power. So is the case of ex-CPM Chief Minister of Tripura for Manik Sarkar and Chief Minister of Goa Mr Manohar Parikar, who was cremated on March 17 in Panji. He was four time Chief Minister of Goa and ex-Defence Minister of India. He died early at the age 63 of deadly disease of pancreatic cancer.
He worked till last and died around 2 in the noon. He presented the State Annual Budget with tubing in nose. A very simple man of very simple life. He used to go the Vidhan Sabha on scooter and in household purchases in the market. He never used official car for his personal works but in his own personal car.
When in 2014 BJP swept into power with Mr Narendra Modi becoming the Prime Minister, Mr Manohar Parikar was Chief Minister of Goa. Mr Modi urged him to join Government of India as the Defence Minister and he obliged him by coming to centre.
Being simple man of simple life he attended many international high profile meetings dressed in half sleeve shirt and a hawai chhapal. But on all such occasion it was not his dress but his personality and ability that counted much more than his simple dress. A political collegue to his pointed out to him about his dress in critic way, he responded by saying he enjoys simple life.
Many ministers leaders of all parties paid high tributes and his simple life like sitting on scooter, standing in a queue referred and projected in social media. But real tributes to him will be that onwards all the Central and state Chief Minister will follow to lead simple life while in offices as he lived.
They should not use their official car for personal and family use, will be available to people in easy way. They will not claim precedence over other in stand in queue in public function.
Let us remember on this occasion that it was President of India. Mr KR Narayan who stood in a queue to vote in general election at polling booth. With his this act the governor of state also started going to vote but alas they do not stand in queue.
