Mahad bridge collapse : Death toll rises to 20

With the recovery of four more bodies from Savitri river, the toll in Mahad tragedy has touched 20. The tragedy occurred when two buses and some private vehicles were swept away following collapse of a British- era bridge on Tuesday night.

Due to torrential rains in the area, search operation has been hampered. Four team of NDRF, nine boats and 75 local swimmers are carrying out the rescue work. Even after 60 hrs of the incident, agencies could not trace the remains of two State Transport buses and other private vehicles.

The Maharashtra government has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased. The state transport department has announced to provide a job to the kin of driver and conductors, who drowned in the river, Transport Minister, Diwaka Raote said.
