Renowned scientist Raghunath A Mashelkar, actor director Kamala Haasan, film director Santosh Sivan, actors Paresh Rawal and Vidya Balan, classical singer Begum Parveena Sultana, writers Anita Desai and Ruskin Bond, sportspersons Yuvraj Singh, Pullella Gopichand, Leander paes, Anjum Chopra and Dipika Pallikal were today among 127 people selected for the Padma Awards, the highest civilian honours in the country.
‘’The President of India has approved conferment of 127 Padma Awards including one duo case (counted as one),’’ a spokesperson of the Home Ministry said.
While two persons- scientist Raghunath A Mashelkar and Yoga exponent B K S Iyengar – were selected for the Padma Vibhushan; 24 personalities, including painter Gulam Mohammed Sheikh, classical singer Begum Parveen Sultana, actors Kamala Haasan, litterateurs Mrityunjay Athreya, Anita Desai and Ruskin Bond, sportspersons Pullela Gopichand and Leander Paes, civil servant Vijayendra Nath Kaul and doctor Neelam Kler were selected for the Padma Bhushan.
A total of 101 personalities have been selected for the Padma Sri awards. These include theatres artist Mohammad Ali Baig, artist Nayana Apte Joshi, film actors Sabitri Chatterjee, Paresh Rawal and Vidya Balan, script writer Sooni Taraporewala, cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Anjum Chopra, Squash player Dipika Rebecca Pallikal, and mountaineer Mamta Sodha. They also include fashion designer Wendelle Rodrickes, film director Santosh Sivan, Painters Sunil Das and Paresh maity, performing artist Anuja Sharma, scientist Sekhar Basu, Vinod Singh and Ramaswamy Iyer, industrialists Rajesh Saraiya, Mallika Srinivasan and Pratap Govindrao Pawar, dermatologist Kiritkumar Mansukhlal Acharya, Oncologist Ramakant Krishnaji Deshpande and Ophthalmologist Amod Gupta and writer Keki N Daruwalla.
