The IPL eight IPL franchises spent their funds intelligently or otherwise, but the hot bidding for the IPL 2018 season came to close on Sunday with Indian seniors and juniors walking with rich purse.
Aussie fast bowler English all rounder Ben Stones garnering Rs 12.5 crore being gobbled up by Rajasthan Royals, while Left arm pacer Mitchell Starc was the top draw with Rs 12.5 crore purse bought by Kolkata Knight Riders, while left hand pacer Jaidev Unadkat garnered the richest purse among Indians at Rs 11.5 crore bought by Rajasthan Royals.
Karnataka players K L Rahul, Manish Pandey were bought for Rs 11 lakh each by KXIP and Sunrisers Hyderabad while Robin Uthappa a wicket keeper was the second best among the gloves men being cornered by Kolkata Knight riders for Rs 6.4 crore.
However, there was a belated applause for top T20 player Chris Gayle who was brought at the base price of Rs 2 Crore by Kings XI Punjab when the names of marquee players came up under hammer for the second time today.
At the end of the two-day auctions, that included international players, top Indian cricketers and uncapped but highly talented players including the potentially World Cup winning Under-19 Indian team players, the best got their due and the others were rejected.
Incidentally the franchises were looking for most fit players and this was the reason why Gayle got his minimum and many other foreign players were not considered.
At the end the total players sold were 169. This included 113 Indians, 56 overseas besides other uncapped players.
The total money spent by the eight franchises was Rs 431.70 crore. The most expensive buy was Ben Stokes (Rs 12.5 crores) among foreign players. Most expensive Indian buy was Jaydev Unadkat (Rs 11.5 crore) and Rajasthan Royal management was very happy.
RR Chairman and CEO Ranjit Bhorthakar said, Unadkat in such short career had reached 100 wickets and was a sharp strike bowler and deserve the price. He said, after a two year heitus, his team now had a good batting line-up which will make up for some short comings in death bowlers and a top spinner.
