Agencies, Shimla

After a week-long deliberation and huddles within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in selecting the new Chief Minister for Himachal Pradesh, party legislative party on Sunday unanimously elected five-time MLA Jai Ram Thakur as the Chief Minister.

Mr Thakur would replace six-time Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh as Congress lost the assembly elections after facing major defeat from BJP as the latter won 44 seats out of 68, pushing the ruling Congress to 21 from 36 seats in the last elections.

In a high level meeting attended by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of Urban Development Narendra Tomar and party state in-charge and Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey, state core committee members and newly elected legislators, elected Mr Thakur as the next Chief Minister.

Mr Jai Ram Thakur is the sixth Himachal leader and third from BJP who would become the Chief Minister of this hill state. Earlier Dr YS Parmar, Ram Lal Thakur, Shanta Kumar, Virbhadra Singh and Prem Kumar Dhumal have been elected to this post.

Mr Parmar was elected four times, Mr Kumar — three times, Mr Singh — five times, and Mr Dhumal two times. Mr Thakur was elected after senior leaders pacified Prem Kumar Dhumal and JP Nadda, who were in the race for the post of CM.

The swearing-in ceremony will be held at the historic Ridge ground in Shimla. No date has been fixed for this as yet. It is, however, likely that the ceremony will be held after the swearing-in ceremony of the new Chief Minister of Gujarat, the sources said.

HP Governor invites BJP to form govt

Himachal Pradesh Governor Acharya Dev Vrat on Sunday invited Bharatiya Janata Party to form the next government in the hill state, after MLA Jai Ram Thakur was picked by the party’s high command for the Chief Minister’s post.

After the meeting, Mr Thakur along with BJPs several senior leader gave a letter to Governor staking claim to form the government. Mr Thakur will replace six-time Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh as Congress has lost the assembly elections in the state.

The BJP managed to win 44 seats out of 68 and pushed the ruling Congress to 21 from 36 seats in the last assembly. Mr Thakur has thanked the people of the state for their support. He said that he would take oath as Chief Minister at Ridge Ground Shimla on December 27, a day after oath taking ceremony in Gujarat.

Mr Thakur would be sworn-in as 13th Chief Minister of the HP. The BJP unit in HP has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah to grace the oath taking ceremony. Mr Thakur is a five times MLA from BJP and in recently concluded state assembly polls, he won from Siraj assembly seat.
