New Delhi, India shooter Apurvi Chandela went on to broke the world record clinching yellow metal in the women’s 10m Air Rifle event, the tournament’s first final at the ISSF World Cup here at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range on Saturday.
Apurvi, 2014 Commonwealth gold medallist shot a scintillating world record score of 252.9 winning the gold for the country.While China had to settle for silver and bronze respectively with Ruozhu Zhao shot (251.8), and Hong Xu (230.4).)
The shooter secured fourth spot in the qualification round and made to the finals. The start for Apurvi was a bit shaky, but came back shining and scored 10.5 or above in her last 10 shots in the final to gave the country first gold and smashing the world record.
Among the Indian shooters in the 10m Air Rifle event Anjum Moudgil, Apurvi Chandela and Elavenil Valarivan only Apurvi was among the top 8 shooters to make to the finals.
Anjum Moudgil shot 628.0 and missed the final by 0.1 point, while Elavenil Valarivan was placed 30th with 625.3. Shooting in the MQS section, Mehuli Ghosh had the second best score with 631.0.
In the other events of the day in the men’s 50-metre rifle 3-position event in which Olympian Chain Singh with a total of 1145 remained at 35 spot to crash out of the event. Sanjeev Rajput (1173) and Parul Kumar (1149) made it to qualification from the elimination rounds.
In the women’s 25-metre sports pistol, Manu Bhaker was at her best as she notched up 296 out of 300, with 98, 99 and 99 on the three cards. Asian Games gold medallist Rahi Sarnobat had shot 287 remained at 25th. The third member of the Indian team, Chinki Yadav with 288 remained at 22nd spot.
The second half with the rapid fire section will be held on Sunday, followed by the final for the top eight.
