Diplomatic row over Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade’s arrest and mistreatment escalated today with India again insisting on dropping of charges of visa fraud involving her maid and the US rejecting the demand.
‘’I don’t know about demand for unconditional apology, but we want the cases against our diplomat to be dropped,’’ Minister of State for External Affairs Preneet Kaur said here.
However, a US State Department spokesperson categorically rejected the demand, saying that the allegations against Dr Khobragade were very serious and they will be pursued.
She said the US State Department made it clear to all countries every year that they had certain obligations towards their staff under the US laws and they have to fulfil it.
Any violations of these laws was taken very seriously, she said.
Ms Kaur said what had happened was absolutely ‘’unacceptable’’.
Meanwhile, External Affairs Salman Khurshid today said everything was being done to resolve the issue.
US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Wendy Sherman had last evening spoke to Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh over telephone and discussed specific steps to resolve the issue.
US Secretary of State John Kerry had on Wednesday evening called National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon to express regret over the incident.
According to reports from New York, Dr Khobragade after her arrest was not only handcuffed but strip-searched and put in jail with drug addicts. However, Attorney of the South district of the city Preet Bharara has rejected all these reports and claimed that all civilities and due courtesies were shown to the Indian diplomat.
