Ideology of Lord Buddha can help in curbing terrorism

President Pranab Mukherjee today emphasised the need for following the ideology of Lord Buddha to contain the menace of growing terrorism across the globe by saying that the challenge to protect humanity had become even more difficult.

Mr Mukherjee, while addressing the valedictory session of three-day International Buddhist Conclave here, said terrorism had posed a challenge to protect humanity and it could be faced successfully by following the principle and ideology of Lord Buddha.

“Ideology of Lord Buddha is still relevant and it could help in resolving the conflict erupted in several parts of the globe,” Mr Mukherjee said, adding that terrorism was a sort of psychological disorder of a person engaged in such activities.

The president recalled the glorious past of Bihar as educational institutions par excellence like Nalanda University and Vikaramshila University, which existed since ancient period till 12th century, were known for quality education across the globe. There was ample scope for debates in such ancient institutions and freedom was for all to express their views, he pointed out.

Mr Mukherjee said free and frank debates in educational institutions provided opportunity for students to increase their mental ability and widen the vision. Quality education was important for a person to improve his personality and skill to face challenge of the life, he added.
