Hydropower

The Central and all the State Governments are making efforts and taking step to increase power potential. At the same time there are incredible delays in the execution of such projects. India is largely dependent on the thermal power which is 70 per cent is our requirements. To produce one source of energy (electricity) we are burning another energy (coal).

The other sources the hydro, solar, wind are cheap and environment friendly. India has an estimated hydro power potential of over 1.40 lakh MW but so far we have tapped only 40,000 MW of hydro power. The huge potential of rest of one lakh MW is yet to be achieved. So many hydro projects are lying as waste under the red tapism and most slow working to clear off procedures.

For instance the Subansiri hydro project in Arunachal Pradesh launched in 2003, but in 8 years till 2010 it was wasted in not getting numerous official hindrances like land acquisition, resettlements and rehabilitation, ecological clearance and so may formalities and from December 2017 it stands stalled due to agitations against land acquisition. With so many procedures and hurdles it really very difficult to meet the project timeline.

The hurdles are yet not over and it cost has gone up from Rs.6,000 crores to Rs.18,000 crores and work is yet start and it will take four years for completion. The hydropower is much cheaper than the coal based thermal power. The biggest thermal expenditure is to transship heavy coal from pit head to plant site. The nuclear power is cheapest but the plant cost is too heavy than to the country is setting up nuclear project.

The technique in solar and wind energy are yet not so developed as to have generated on commercial basis. Near Rewa in Madhya Pradesh biggest solar power plant is being set up. The official red tapism is the biggest hurdle not only in power sectors but in all the developmental activities. The system of governance and office working must be changed to be simple way of working.
