Chronicle Reporter, Bhopal, Well-known Dhrupad geniuses Ramakant and Umakant Gundecha, famous as Gundecha brothers, performed at Swar Sarita at Manas Bhavan on the occasion of birth anniversary of Pandit Nand Kishore Sharma and Mahatma Gandhi.
The programme began with Ganesha Vandana and a Kathak performance by students of Saraswati Sangeet Mahavidyalaya. Following this, Dr Lovely Sharma, vice chancellor of Raja Mansingh Tomar Sangeet evam Kala Vishwavidyalaya, and a professional sitarist, gave a melodious performance.
After this, famous Padma Shri singers Umakant and Ramakant Gundecha took to stage to sing Raga Rageshri, and Kabir Das’s Jhini Jhini Bini Chadariya in Raga Charukeshi. Anuja Borude accompanied them on the pakhawaj.
The voice of Gundecha brothers had an extraordinary range, soaring and tumbling like the waves that lash the shore.They unravelled the nuances of dhrupad as if sifting through grains of sand. Their steady and introspective notes held the audience spellbound.
The brothers, Ramakant and Umakant, have been an intrinsic part of Chandralekha’s last choreographic work ‘Sharira’ since 2001, when it was conceptualised.
They were in the city for her tenth death anniversary tribute festival. New Aparajit Shikshan Samiti had organised the musical evening in association with Saraswati Sangeet Mahavidyalaya.
