Gujarat impact: PM urges BJP MPs not to be over confident

Agencies, New Delhi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged party lawmakers to shun “over confidence and complacency” and said BJP leaders and workers should be ready to work harder to achieve greater milestones.

In his address to Bharatiya Janata Party MPs at a meeting here, attended among others by party chief Amit Shah and senior Ministers, Mr Modi also said while the number of seats has come down in Gujarat, the vote share showed there is also a modest increase in the support base.

New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi later told reporters that the party will analyse the factors that led to the BJP losing out on seats even as there was an increase in the vote percentage polled.

Mr Modi said under Indira Gandhi, the Congress party had once set a record by coming to power in 18 states and now BJP and National Democratic Alliance partners have established their footprint in 19 states.

BJP leader Giriraj Singh on Wednesday charged Congress president Rahul Gandhi with misleading the nation by repeated assertions that the main opposition party had scored a moral victory in Gujarat and said in the process, it was running away from its defeat in Himachal Pradesh as well.

“Rahul Gandhi and the Congress party are running away from the fact that they have lost not one – but two states. Mr Gandhi is becoming the first politician to sing laurels about his defeat saying there is a victory in it,” the Union Minister told reporters outside Parliament.

He said by stalling proceedings in both the Houses of Parliament, the opposition is yet again “running away from its responsibility.’

It is time, Mr Giriraj Singh added, that the Congress party sees the mirror and reflect on its continued defeats since 2014 in state assembly elections.
