Grand nagar kirtan taken out, religious hymns rent the air

Sikhs are all set to celebrate the 549th Prakash Utsav of Guru Nanak Dev, the first guru of Sikhs, on November 4. A grand ‘nagar kirtan’ (procession) was taken out from on Thursday on the occasion. ‘Panj Pyaras’, dressed in saffron and sporting ‘kripans’, led the procession.

Following them was ‘palki saheb’ (palanquin) in which the holy book of Sikhs, Sri Guru Granth Saheb ji, was installed. Hundreds of school students in queues were cynosure of all eyes. ‘Gatka’ parties also caught attention of onlookers. ‘Gatka’ is a traditional form of warfare in which the warrior uses wooden sticks and swords.

The procession passed through prominent localities of the city including Noor Mahal Road, Imami Gate, Sadar Manzil, Peer Gate, Sindhi Market, Old Post Office, Jumerati Gate, Ghora Nakkas, Bus Stand Square etc before culminating at Gurdwara Nanaksar Hamidia Road at 8 pm.

Religious hymns rent the air and ‘prasad’ was distributed throughout the route. Religious preachers recalled teachings of Guru Nanak and devotees recited Shabad Kirtan.
