Defence Minister A K Antony today asked Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to concentrate on emerging Defence technologies to meet various challenges and threats and said low-end research must be given to private sector and industries.
Speaking at a meeting of the Consultative Committee attached to his Ministry here, Mr Antony said the DRDO was spending nearly 80 per cent of its budget on Mission Mode Projects, with deliverables for the Armed Forces. However, to be able to focus DRDO’s energies on such projects, the task of carrying out low-end research must be given away to the private sector and the industries, he said. He said the DRDO had already implemented major recommendations of the Dr Rama Rao Committee and based on these recommendations, seven Technology Clusters had been created in the new organisational set-up of DRDO at different locations, each headed by an empowered Director General.
Mr Antony said the much-awaited Initial Operational Clearance for the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) was scheduled tomorrow at Bangalore and hoped that DRDO would continue to strive to complete all its projects on time.
