Finally, Afzal Guru sent to gallows

Hanging Afzal GuruAgencies, New Delhi More than two months after 26/11 terror attack convict Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab was hanged in Pune’s jail, Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru was sent to the gallows in a secret operation in Tihar Jail here this morning.

Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde and Home Secretary R K Singh confirmed that Guru, who was convicted of plotting the 2001 terror attack on the Indian Parliament, was hanged at 0800 hrs inside Tihar Jail. Curfew has been clamped around Tihar Jail and in several parts of Kashmir.

Rashtrapati Bhavan spokesperson Venu Rajamony has confirmed that the mercy plea of the Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorist was rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee on February 3, clearing the decks for his execution. Guru was convicted of conspiracy in the December 2001 attack on Parliament and was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court in 2004. On December 13, 2001, five heavily-armed gunmen stormed the Parliament complex and opened indiscriminate fire, killing nine people. A year later, four accused, including Guru, were arrested for the attack and found guilty after a trial.

 

Protest rallies in hilly belts of Jammu, alert sounded Agencies, Jammu: A high alert was sounded and additional troops were deployed in the mountainous belts of Jammu region following rallies to protest hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in Delhi’s Tihar jail today. ‘’To protest hanging of Guru, rallies were taken out in the Banihal, Bhaderwah, Kishtwar and Doda districts of Jammu but we have sounded alert,’’ a senior police official here told. He said no untoward incidents were reported during the rallies adding, ‘’heavy deployment of police, para-military forces and Army have been made in the sensitive areas of the region to avoid tension.’’

Rajouri and Poonch districts remained peaceful but extra troops have been deployed as security measures. ‘’Vigil is being maintained across the region and the administration has made heavy deployment of police and paramilitary forces at vulnerable and sensitive areas while the Army has been asked to be on stand by,’’ he added. Guru, hailing from Sopore area of north Kashmir, was hanged this morning for his role in the December 13, 2001 attack on the Parliament. Guru was convicted of conspiracy and was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court in 2004. On December 13, 2001, five heavily-armed gunmen stormed the Parliament complex and opened indiscriminate fire, killing nine people.

BJP welcomes hanging, calls it delayed action

Agencies, New Delhi The Bharatiya Janata Party today welcomed hanging of the 2001 Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru but said it was a ‘’delayed action’’. ‘’The BJP welcomes the decision to hang Afzal Guru. But it is a delayed action.

The people of India were waiting for a long time for such action against the elements which were involved in terrorism against India,’’ BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said. He said the Parliament attack was an attack on the ‘’temple of the democracy’’ and Afzal’s hanging will give a strong message to the terrorists. ‘’Strong action is needed against terrorists and those people who are working against our country,’’ he added. ‘’We welcome the decision. It is a right decision but a delayed action,’’ BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said. Guru was hanged in Delhi’s Tihar jail at about 0800 hrs this morning. His mercy plea was rejected by President Pranab Mukherjee. Guru was given the death sentence by the Supreme Court. In December 2001, five heavily-armed terrorists drove into the Parliament complex and opened fire. Nine people were killed, most of them members of the security forces. The terrorists were shot dead.

Afzal was calm, before his execution

Agencies, New Delhi Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, who was hanged at Tihar Jail this morning, was calm and peaceful before his execution, a senior official from Tihar Jail said.

Afzal Guru was executed in a secret operation in Tihar Jail this morning. ‘’No signs of remorse were shown by Afzal Guru and he was calm and peaceful before he was executed,’’ the senior official from Tihar Jail said. A health check up of Afzal Guru was conducted by a doctor before he was taken for the execution near his cell, the official said. Afzal Guru’s body was buried inside the prison complex soon after his execution. ‘’Afzal was buried with full religious rites and the rites were performed by a Maulavi,’’ the official said. At the time of Afzal Guru’s execution, a magistrate, a doctor and senior prison officials were present, the official added. Guru was convicted of conspiracy in the December 2001 attack on Parliament and was sentenced to death by the Supreme Court in 2005.

Security tightened in capital after hanging

Agencies, New Delhi Tight security was clamped across Delhi after hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru at Tihar Jail this morning. A high alert has been issued in all police stations in the capital, police sources said. They said that police patrolling has been increased in crowded market areas of the city, railway stations and bus terminals.
