Exit polls predict BJP win in Gujarat, Himachal

67 per cent turnout in Gujarat

The BJP, with unwaning Modi magic, is all set to retain prestigious Gujarat with clear majority, according to the exit polls which were out on Thursday at the end of high-voltage two-phase Assembly election.

The Times Now-VMR survey gave the saffron party 109 seats in the 182-member assembly as against 70 to the Congress, while another exit poll by Republic TV-C-Voter predicted the ruling party walking away with 108 seats leaving only 74 for the Congress.

The survey by India Today-Axis MyIndia Poll also gave BJP a clear edge predicting 99 to 113 seats while giving 68 to 82 seats to the Congress which put up a determined fight. The CNN News 18 exit poll sees the BJP winning at 125 seats as against 57 for the Congress.

The exit poll by ABP news channel, was however less generous, giving BJP possible win on 91 to 99 seats as against 78 to 86 seats for the Congress in the western state. In the politically-crucial Saurashtra region, the survey by India Today-Axis MyIndia Poll said Congress was predicted to having a clear edge with 49 per cent of votes and around 30 seats.

The exit polls see a loss of 8 per cent votes to the ruling BJP in the region, which would bring down its tally to 23.

Agencies, Gandhinagar An estimated 67 per cent turnout of 2.12 crore voters was registered on Thursday in the second and final phase of Gujarat assembly elections.

There were 93 constituencies at stake in the second phase in the voting which concluded at 1700 hrs in the north and central parts of the western state where the Bharatiya Janata party had been in power for the past 22 years .

Sabarkantha recorded the highest turnout at 70.61 per cent till 4pm and Dahod lowest at 53.8 per cent. Overall voter turnout registered at 62.37 per cent till 4pm. A total of 851 candidates were in the fray in the final phase. Security was stepped up in various parts of the state in the wake of the elections.

The BJP had fielded 93 candidates for this phase, and 91 by the Congress party. Results will be declared on December 18. In the 2012 assembly polls, the BJP had won 115 seats, against the 61 of the Congress party.

The election is being held in 93 seats across over 25000 polling stations in central as well as north Gujarat. The first phase of elections was held on December 9 in 89 seats of Saurashtra and south Gujarat region. The result will be declared on December 18.
