Do not teach us the lesson of Democracy: PM

New Delhi,

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday took head-on the Opposition Congress, saying ‘Democracy is our veins’.

Replying to the Motion of Thanks to President’s Address in the Lok Sabha, Mr Modi said, ‘For decades, one party devoted all their energies to serving one family. The interests of the nation were overlooked just for the interests of one family.

Lashing out at the Congress, he said ,’ Don’t teach us the lesson of Democracy.’
‘How can one of the leaders say India got a democracy due to Pandit Nehru and the Congress Party? Is this their reading of India’s history? What arrogance is this?’
Mr Modi charged the Congress with dividing the country during Partition.

‘You divided the country when there was no Opposition, no media. First Radio and after that TV, was dedicated to you. There were no PILs or NGOs. From Panchayats to Parliament, you ruled the country. You sang for one family only and wasted country’s time and energy.

‘If you had acted responsibly, the nation would have reached places. If the direction and the policies had been right, and the intentions had been honest, our country would have reached places.’

India did not get democracy due to Pandit Nehru, as Congress wants people to believe, adding that there were many examples of rich democratic traditions that dates back centuries ago. ‘Democracy is integral to this nation and is in our culture,’ he added.

He said the country was democratic and free even at the time of Buddha.
‘When Rajiv Gandhi landed in Hyderabad, how did he behave with a Congress leader Mr T Anjaiah. He humiliated a big leader, who did not belong to a privileged background,’ Mr Modi said.

‘How did the Congress act in Kerala, how did they treat the Akali Dal in Punjab, how did they behave in Tamil Nadu? Why did Congress dismiss so many state governments at their will. This is no commitment to democracy,’ he pressed his point.

The Prime Minister said,’We cannot forget how the Congress insulted Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, a proud son of Andhra Pradesh. They humiliated him. Nobody in India needs lessons on democracy from the Congress Party.’

He also mentioned about ‘election’ (coronation) for the post of Congress president when one youngster raised his voice and how the chiefs were chosen in the grand old party.

Mr Modi said 12 out of 15 Congress Committees voted for Vallabh Bhai Patel (Three did not vote), yet Patel was not given the charge of the country, adding that ‘if Patel had been made Prime Minister, ‘that’ part of Kashmir would have been with us.’
