Dissident Trinamool leader Mukul Roy joins BJP

Agencies, New Delhi

In what was perceived as a shot in the arm for the BJP in West Bengal, former Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy on Friday joined the party. Mr Roy joined the party this evening in the presence of senior BJP leader and Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad and BJP general secretary and West Bengal in-charge, Kailash Vijayvargiya.

Welcoming the new entrant, Mr Prasad said Mr Roy’s experience will come in handy for the Bharatiya Janata Party to expand its base in West Bengal. Mr Prasad said Mr Roy has joined the BJP ‘unconditionaly’.

Mr Prasad told reporters that Mr Mukul Roy, who had been a Member of Parliament for 12 years, was a founder member of the Trinamool Congress and played a key role in its establishment in West Bengal.

Mr Roy said, ‘’ Today, I have joined BJP and it is my proud privilege to work under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.’’ He added, ‘’ I believe BJP is a secular force and in the near future, will come to power in West Bengal.’’

Last month, Mr Roy, a Rajya Sabha member, was suspended from the All India Trinamool Congress for six years for dissident activities.
