Shikhar Dhawan completes his 12th century and also went past 4000 runs in ODIs as he and Shreyas Iyer put India on course for a series win against Sri Lanka in the Y.S.Rajasekhar Reddy ACA-VDCA stadium here on Sunday.

Shikhar Dhawan had plenty of reason to celebrate at the ACA-VDCA stadium on Sunday, a ground on which he made his international debut in 2009.

Eight years ago, he fell for a duck against Australia but against Sri Lanka on Sunday, Dhawan notched up his 12th century off 85 balls and along with Shreyas Iyer, who also hit his second fifty, helped India to a record eighth consecutive bilateral series win Chasing 216, India lost skipper Rohit Sharma cheaply for 7 after he was bowled by Akila Dananjaya’s googly but Dhawan and Iyer played cautiously.

The left-hander got going with a flick off Dananjaya past mid on for a boundary but he got going in style by smashing Suranga Lakmal straight down the ground and crashing a drive through cover.

The aggressive opener capitalised on some loose bowling as he and Iyer hit 35 runs in three overs to take the game away. Dhawan neared his landmark by pulling Thisara Perera over mid wicket and he notched up his milestone in style by slog sweeping Dananjaya over deep mid wicket to bring up his second consecutive fifty of the series.

The left-hander continued to bat with assurance and nearly survived a run-out chance on 61. However, In the 26th over, Dhawan entered the 4000 club by driving Asela Gunaratne to long-off.
