Bhubaneswar, A hat-trick goal haul by Blake Govers powered defending champion Australia thrashed debutant China by 11-0 in their last Pool B league match of the Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup at Kalinga Stadium here on Friday. With three wins in the league round matches, Australia gathered nine points and entered the quarterfinals.
World no 1 Australia dominated over the debutant China from the beginning of the match, with experience and skills they beat China in all departments.
Australia got their first PC in the ninth minute, Blake Govers opened the floodgates for the Kookaburras with a powerful dragflick into the left corner of the post.
Just before the end of the first quarter, again Australia awarded with another PC, Jeremy Hayward’s dragflick was well saved by Chinese goalkeeper Wang Caiyu, but the rebound was received by Dylan Witherspoon and pushed it to skipper Aran Zalewski who double the lead in the 15th minute.
In the second quarter Australian were looked more furious by nailing four more goals to ensure their undisputed supremacy in their last league round match.
In the beginning of the second quarter, an initial attempt was blocked by China, Tom Craig joined the goal shower by scoring a goal from a close range in the 16 minute. Australia got a PC in the 19th minute, star forward Blake Govers scored his second goal of the match and fourth of the World Cup.
The Australian were awarded hat-trick PC in a row, Jeremy Hayward placed his PC into the right bottom corner to script a 5-0 lead for the team. In the last minute of the second quarter, Jake Whetton received a pass from Blake Govers and put it into the box in the 29th minute and the first half ended with 6-0 score.
It was an uphill task for China to stop the goal flow, Australia was nailed three more goals in the third quarter.
In the 33rd minute, Flynn Ogilvie passed the ball to Tim Brand who was standing unmarked inside the circle scored the seventh goal for Australia.
Jeremy Hayward was took the advantage of a missed pass from Guo Jin and pushed the ball inside the D area to Blake Govers who smashed it to complete his hat-trick in the 34th minute.
Dylan Witherspoon scored ninth goal in the 38th minute, he was the seventh different scorer for the Australian in this match. The unstoppable Australia scored two goals in the final quarter to sealed the match 11-0 in their favour.
Flynn Ogilvie was the eight member of the winning team to joined the party by scoring a goal in the 49th minute, while Tim Brand netted his second individual goal in the 55th minute of the match.
