SONIA IN KERALA

Congress President Sonia Gandhi today alleged that the country is witnessing a spurt in communal violence, especially in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra soon after the BJP-led government came to power at the Centre.

Addressing a meeting of party leaders and office bearers at Kerala Pradesh Congress Party (KPCC) Office here, she said there were hardly any cases of communal violence during the first and second term of the UPA.
Atrocities against women, children, Scheduled Casts and other weaker section of the society are also a major cause of concern, she added.
Alleging that BJP is responsible for violence, she said Congress was committed to protect the secular fabric of the  country.

Praising the KPCC for launching ‘Quit India Violence’ campaign from August 9 to 15, in commemoration of Quit India Movement of 1942, she said the campaign could resist attempts by certain quarters to divide people on communal lines and foment violence.

‘The challenges faced by democracy in the country are divisive tendencies, violence and communalism,’ she added.

Urging the party men to work hard for the victory of upcoming local body and Assembly elections in the state, she praised the KPCC for setting up 20,000 booth level committees as part of the advanced preparations for facing the polls.

This kind of organisational preparedness is necessary for bringing back Congress into power in the next General elections of 2019, and it can also be a role model for other states for the victory of Congress, she added.
