Compound wall of soft drinks firm godown collapses, 11 killed

Eleven migrant workers from Andhra Pradesh were crushed to death, when an under-construction 20-ft high compound wall of a godown, belonging to a popular soft drinks firm, collapsed and fell on a row of make-shift tents at Upparapalayam village near Alamatti in Tiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu today.

Reports received at the police headquarters here said six men, four women and a child were killed on the spot when the wall collapsed due to heavy rains.

Police said a 19-year-old boy, was rescued from the debris as teams from the fire and rescue services department, along with police and revenue officials acted swiftly, cleared the debris and shifted the bodies to the Tiruvallur Government Hospital for post-mortem.

All the victims were migrant construction workers hailing  from Andhra Pradesh and were sleeping in the make-shift tents adjoining the compound wall when the tragedy occurred.
