Presently the country is facing energy crisis in all the sources of coal, petro crude, thermal and hydro power. The only viable and reliable source appears to be civilise of nuclear power.
The energy crisis is taking very serious turn and if not planned and managed well in time the consequences well be very disastrous to hamper the overcall development of the country. The coal is itself energy and also source of thermal power, now most of upcoming and updated industries are operating of electricity but there are many industries still running on coal.
Among these the thermal power plants are solely dependent on it otherwise they are just closed units. In Madhya Pradesh the Satpura Power plants are not working at full capacity power generation because of short supply of coal. The Union Coal Minister Mr Jaiprakash Jaiswal has sounded a stern warning that number of thermal power plants are coming up all over the country but we do not have enough coal to keep them in operation for power generation. The quality of coal is very low because of high ash content in it. The Central Government has worked out policy of “pool pricing system” to import the coal from African Countries, Australia and Indonesia.
The Madhya Pradesh government has already entered into contracts with Indonesia for coal supplies to its power plants. Coal being heavy material its shipment freights are very high to make the imports very costly. The India is also asessing the quantity and quality of coal in mines of African nation Muzambiane to invest there and other African nation. The hydro power is cheap and environmental friendly but it is not reliable. In case of short fall of rain in catment areas it river dams the hydro power generation is not possible. We do not have petrocrude reserve to fulfill our needs.
Although oil explorations are being carried in offshore seas and river begins, we have discovered it in Assam, Gujarat, Bombay High and being explored in Godavari in Andhra. But its hardly 10 per cent of our total requirements. The only option is the atomic-nuclear power plants. It is cheapest and the best among all the power sources. But the severe earthquakes and tsunami waves devastation in Japan . Fikushima has created scare and apprehensions about nuclear power plants.
The Germany had shut down it 22 atomic power plants and having securd thought another and future plants. The Japan stands terrified. We are already have many nuclear power plants in Trombay, Kota etc. Somany other countries have not acted in panic to shut it down in France the nuclear power is 75 per cent of its total generation. The India stands at a cross road to decide its power policy to fulfill its requirements. We are running very short of energy sources are it may severely affect our economic development.
