Guwahati, Close to 50% voter turnout has been recorded till early afternoon in the five Lok Sabha constituencies of Assam where polling in the second phase is underway today.Official sources here said the average poll percentage till 1300 hours was 46.42%, with brisk polling underway in the all the constituencies.
The voter turnout in Mangaldai constituency has been 50.97% so far, while in Autonomous Districts (Diphu) it is 49.90%, in Karimganj 46.87%, in Silchar 44.13% and in Nagaon, 41.52%. Re-poll for first phase is also underway at Dhemaji Town High School, under Lakhimpur Lok Sabha seat, with the polling percentage nearly 50%.
Polling for the second phase has been progressing smoothly, official sources said, adding that any reports of malfunctioning of EVMs are being addressed swiftly.
On election eve yesterday, suspected militants had detonated a grenade in front of a local BJP leader’s house at Bokolia, under Diphu constituency, last evening, though no one was injured.
A little known Dimasa militant group has also called for a bandh during the polling hours in the constituency, but no impact of the bandh has been seen.
Polling across the constituencies is being held under tight security arrangements, with 169 companies of security personnel deployed, with minimum one constable per polling station ensured.Polling is being conducted in 8,992 polling stations, including 1,033 in remote locations.
Altogether 50 candidates are in fray for the five seats, of which BJP and the Congress hold two each in the outgoing Lok Sabha and one is held by All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF).
Fate of three sitting Lok Sabha MPs, the deputy speaker of Assam Assembly and a former president of state Congress committee, who is also a Rajya Sabha member, among others, will be sealed in EVMs.
As many as 544 micro observers have been appointed, along with six general observers, five expenditure observers and three police observers.
The number of Flying Squad Teams deployed for second phase is 137, besides 127 Static Surveillance Teams and 105 Video Surveillance teams. There are 137 all-women polling stations and 84 model polling stations.Total electors for the second phase is 69,10,592, including 33,55,952 females and 180 Third Gender.
Among the candidates, sitting Silchar MP and president of All India Mahila Congress Sushmita Dev is seeking a second successive term from the same seat.The other two sitting MPs in the ring are Biren Singh Engti of Congress from Diphu constituency and Radheshyam Biswas of AIUDF from Karimganj.
Deputy speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly Kripanath Mallah has been fielded by the BJP from Karimganj.Rajya Sabha MP and former president of Assam Congress Bhubaneswar Kalita is contesting on the party ticket from Mangaldai, which is currently held by the BJP.
In Nagaon, BJP has replaced its longest serving MP from North East and MoS for Railways Rajen Gohain and fielded sitting Nagaon MLA Roopak Sharma.
The first phase polling for five constituencies was held on April 11, which recorded 78% voter turnout in peaceful voting.The third and final phase for four remaining seats is scheduled on April 23.Counting of votes will be undertaken on May 23.
