Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati today demanded that the Centre speed up the CBI probe into the Badaun gang rape and murder case and impose President’s rule in the state.

“The Centre should direct the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to speedily investigate the sensitive issue so that the guilty people get capital punishment,” Ms Mayawati told reporters here before heading towards Badaun to meet the family members of the deceased girls.

Chiding the Akhilesh Yadav government in the state for the deteriorating law and order situation, the BSP president said it was only after announcement to visit the bereaved families in Badaun, the CM has recommended a CBI probe.

Mr Yadav had earlier asked the families of the murdered girls to give their demand for the CBI probe in written.

The BSP president further denounced SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav for his remark regarding rapists and said the SP government should resign on moral grounds. Else, Governor B L Joshi should recommend for the President rule in the state.

The crime rate has multiplied many folds in the state under the current regime of the SP.

Two girls, who were cousins and aged 14 and 15, had gone missing from their house on the night of May 27 and their bodies were found hanging from a mango tree in a village in Ushait area of Badaun district the next morning. The family of the deceased alleged that local musclemen raped and then killed the girls.

Out of the seven accused, five have been arrested so far. Two policemen – Sarvesh Yadav, Chhatrapal Yadav – and three others – Pappu, Awadhesh Yadav, Urvesh Yadav – are in police  custody.
