BJP forms 6th consecutive Govt in Guj

The Bhartiya Janata Party today formed government in Gujarat for the sixth time in a row with Mr Vijay Rupani taking oath of office as Chief Minister, following the party’s victory in the just-concluded Assembly polls.

With 99 MLAs, BJP has a simple majority in the 182-member Assembly, 16 less than its 2012 tally of 115. The Opposition Congress that had won 61 seats in 2012, managed to increase its tally to 77.

Governor OP Kohli administered oath of office and secrecy to Mr Rupani, his Deputy Nitin Patel and 18 Ministers at the Gandhinagar Sachivalaya Ground.

Mr Rupani and Mr Patel took the oath for the second consecutive term as Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister, respectively. Mr Rupani is the 14th CM of the state.

Besides them, eight Cabinet Ministers and 10 Ministers of State also took oath in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP chief Amit Shah and several other senior party leaders, including Chief Ministers of other NDA-ruled states.
Former Gujarat Chief Ministers Keshu Bhai Patel and Shankar Singh Vaghela also attended the swearing-in ceremony.

The eight Cabinet Ministers include Bhupendrasinh Manubha Chaudasama, Ranchhodbhai Chanabhai Faldu, Kaushikbhai Jamanadas Patel (Kaushik Patel), Saurabh Patel, Vasava Ganpatsinh Vestabhai, Radadiya Jayeshbhai Vitthalbhai, Dilipkumar Viraji Thakor and Ishwarbhai (Anil) Ramanbhai Parmar.

The Ministers of State are Pradipsinh Bhagvatsinh Jadeja, Patel Prabatbhai Savabhai, Jaydrathsinhji Parmar, Patkar Ramanlal Nanubhai,Parsottambhai Odhavijbhai Solanki, Ishwarsinh Thakorbhai Patel, Ahir Vasanbhai Gopalbhai, Kishor Kanani (Kumar), Khabad Bachubhai Maganbhai and Dave Vibhavari.

Among the 10 Ministers of State, five belong to OBC, two Kshatriya and one each from tribal and Patidar castes.Region wise three ministers each in Cabinet rank and MoS rank represent Saurashtra, two Cabinet and three MoS are from South Gujarat and four each from North Gujarat have been inducted in the Cabinet.

Vibhavari Dave is the only woman and also the lone Brahmin face in the Cabinet. The new Cabinet has eight new faces-four each in the rank of Cabinet and MoS, while two Ministers in the previous government Ballabh Kakdia and Rajendra Trivedi failed to make to the list.

The first meeting of the newly-elected Gujarat Cabinet will be held tomorrow.
After taking the oath, Mr Rupani thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP Chief Amit Shah, saying that his government would work for the downtrodden and the needy.

The Prime Minister also thanked the people of Gujarat for their blessings. Expressing his joy over the involvement of people from different walks of life, the Prime Minister said that he cherishes the affection of the people.
