Participating in a talk show’ women in sports the way ahead’ organised by the Press Club of Odisha, Sania said change in the attitude of the people, women and system was needed for the promotion of women in sports.
She said the attitude of the people that the women are born to marry, have kids and manage the kitchens needed to be changed.
Sania said, ‘’we do not have a system that promote women’s sports and the women need to stand up and fight for it’’.
The tennis star said given support and a chance the women could excel and become as famous as their male counterparts.
She urged the parents, media and the administration to support women to excel in sports.
Former athletic Champion and senior IAS Officer C T Suguna regretted that the future of women in sports in the country was alarming.
While other countries have picked up steam, spotted the talents trained them to excel in international level ‘’we have not done the exercise yet’’.
Ms Suguna stressed on the need to spot the talents particularly in rural areas, make long term planning and to execute them perfectly to achieve success.
Stating that the mindset to women sports needed to be changed, she said given a chance the women could go a long way.
Ms Suguna also suggested to utilise the experience of female sportspersons who have excelled in national and international events to promote women in sports.
