Stressing India’s ‘Act East’ policy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived here today to attend the ASEAN and the East Asia summits on the first leg of his three-nation tour to Myanmar, Australia and Fiji.

Myanmar President Thein Sein warmly hosted Mr Modi in the Presidential Palace where the discussions focused on the entire gamut of bilateral relations, inclusive of Connectivity, Commerce and Culture. The Prime Minister emphasised the need to have better road connectivity between the two countries. Both the leaders reviewed the progress of major infrastructure projects, particularly the trilateral highway between India, Myanmar and Thailand. After the 45-minute long ‘warm and cordial’ deliberations at the Presidential Palace, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin told reporters that the two sides agreed to take steps to strengthen cooperation on all the three spheres. Mr Modi will meet Prime Ministers of Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore and the President of South Korea tomorrow.
