Arrest warrant issued against MP minister

Agencies, Bhind

A local court on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant against Madhya Pradesh Minister of State for General Administration Lal Singh Arya in connection with the murder of then Congress legislator Makhanlal Jatav at Gohad in 2009.

Special Judge YK Gupta issued the arrest warrant. Prior to it, police informed the court that it had not been able to serve the bailable warrant of Rs 25,000 issued by the court.

The court had earlier issued bailable warrants against the minister six times. However, neither he appeared before the court nor police succeeded in serving the warrant.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Assembly’s Leader of the Opposition Ajay Singh urged Governor OP Kohli and Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to take resignation from Mr Arya.

He said that the Chief Minister should direct him to present himself before the court. Mr Jatav was shot dead while he was campaigning for Lok Sabha elections on April 13, 2009.

On the basis of his security guard Shivraj Singh’s complaint, police made Narayan Sharma, Sher Singh, Mevaram, Sethi Kaurav, Gandharva Singh, Kedar Singh, Tejnarayan Sharma (since deceased) and Ramrup Singh Gurjar accused in the case.

Based on the deceased legislator’s son and former legislator Ranveer Jatav’s allegations, a court here named the minister an accused in the murder on May 19. Mr Arya moved the High Court’s Gwalior Bench, which cancelled the lower court order and directed fresh hearing.

However, Mr Arya moved the Supreme Court but it quashed his petition on July 24 and directed that the case be continued in Bhind. He was named an accused again by the Bhind court on August 24.

A bailable warrant was issued against him. His subsequent pleas before the High Court’s Gwalior Bench for stay and anticipatory bail were also rejected.
