Chandigarh, Oct 29
Six prominent sports personalities, including three Haryana MLAs, have appealed to the electors to elect the candidate with clean image in the elections to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) scheduled to be held on November 25.
The appeal was made in a signed statement issued here today by Anand Singh Dangi, MLA and President, Haryana Athletics Association, Dharam Bir Singh, MLA and President, Haryana Swimming Association, Rao Dan Singh MLA and Working President, Haryana Football Association, Ravinder Singh, President, Haryana Basketball Association, Ashok Mehta, President, Haryana Kabaddi (Circle) Association and Sandeep Singh, President, Haryana Kabaddi (NS) Association.
‘We sports lovers today fervently appeal at this historic moment to the electorate to exercise their franchise with a sense of responsibility so that sports and youth affairs are handled by able and conscientious persons who can give a sense of direction and motivate the youth of this country,’ they said.
Referring to the projected current national scenario of graft/sleaze occupying centre stage, they said that it wass being widely debated upon but not discussed.
‘The Commonwealth Games held in the recent past in India created a furore with its related alleged scams tumbling out days thereafter.
In the backdrop of this depressing scenario the forthcoming elections of the office bearers of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) give us an opportunity to think, act and cleanse the system by electing people who are men of proven integrity, vision and dedication,’ they said.
Suresh Kalmadi, they said, had “thankfully been prohibited” from contesting these elections. “However, as expected, his stooges of the likes of Mr Lalit Bhanot and Mr Abhay Chautala are contesting for the post of Secretary General and President respectively even though Mr Bhanot was one of the main accused in the CWG scam and also remained behind bars. It would be sad indeed if they once again manage to win the elections,” they added.
“The presidential candidate backed by Mr Kalmadi namely Mr Abhay Chautala had a chequered past. The entire Chautala family today was involved in various scandals and the CBI which investigated them now in JBT scam and Disproportionate Assets cases had chargesheeted them. They are also facing money laundering proceedings before the Directorate of Enforcement,” they alleged.
“It would indeed be shameful if the electorate chooses to elect such dubious characters to run the sports affairs in the country particularly when their attitude towards fair sex is highly despicable. In fact their win would be a reflection on the integrity of the electorate itself which has been managed/manipulated over the years by the persons of the same ilk,”they said.
“We hope this earnest and desperate appeal for cleansing a noble human activity like Sports will not go unresponded and unheeded,” they added.
