Agencies, New Delhi

The Supreme Court today approved new worship norms for Lord Mahakal temple in Ujjain temple in Madhya Pradesh state. A bench, headed by Justice NVRamanna, passed the order after hearing in detail the arguments from various petitioners and respondents.

The norms approved by the apex court were made by the temple authorities to stop wastage of edible items. The Supreme Court had formed a committee of experts that visited the Mahakaleshwar temple in Ujjain recently. The committee has recommended restricting certain offerings by devotees to save the Shivling.

A body of intellectuals, Ujjaini Vidwat Parishad, started the debate over the Shivling saying it has shrunk due to excessive “bhaang shingar” (offering of bhaang) and panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, sugar and ghee), so the apex court quantify and approve the norms that made by the authorities and expert committee. After approval of these norms, RO water will be used for Jalabhishek.
