Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today expanded his nearly four-year-old Council by inducting former premier Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s nephew and Legislator Anoop Mishra besides elevating ministers of state (independent charge) Rajendra Shukl, Paras Jain and Ranjana Baghel to Cabinet rank.

Governor Ram Naresh Yadav administered the oaths of office and secrecy during a simple ceremony at the Raj Bhavan. Among the host of dignitaries present were Mr Chouhan, Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary Ananth Kumar, BJP state President Prabhat Jha, Council members and several senior bureaucrats.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today expanded his Council by inducting former premier Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s nephew Anoop Mishra as a Cabinet minister besides elevating ministers of state (independent charge) Rajendra Shukl, Paras Jain and Ranjana Baghel to Cabinet rank. With today’s exercise, the number of Cabinet ministers — including Mr Chouhan — increased to 24. The ministers of state are nine in number. At a ceremony in the Raj Bhavan’s Durbar Hall this evening, Governor Ram Naresh Yadav administered the oaths of office and secrecy to the foursome.
Besides Mr Chouhan, those present included Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary and Madhya Pradesh In-charge Ananth Kumar, BJP state President Prabhat Jha, ministers and senior bureaucrats. “The portfolios will be allocated soon. The expansion was a completely balanced exercise and there is scant need to fill the remaining posts,” the Chief Minister told the press. Keeping the Assembly’s strength in view there can be a maximum 35 ministers.
Mr Mishra tendered his resignation from the Council about two years back when his kin’s names figured in a first information report (FIR) of a murder at Belagaon near Gwalior. The matter went to court and the names were deleted from the FIR some months later.
“I will fulfil my responsibility irrespective of the department assigned to me. I was proved innocent in court but my not becoming a minister again seemed to show that the party did not believe I was blameless,” Mr Mishra told media.

Pointing out that Mr Mishra had resigned on moral grounds, Mr Chouhan said that he had been re-inducted as he was proved innocent.
Reacting to the development, the Assembly’s Leader of the Opposition Ajay Singh alleged that promoting “tainted and unsuccessful” ministers to Cabinet rank proved that the regime is not interested in a corruption-free rule.
