Lucknow, Samajwadi Party’s president and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav was on Tuesday stopped by the airport authority from boarding a private flight to Prayagraj to attend a programme of the Allahabad University Union function and felicitation by the Akhara Parishad.
The SP leader alleged that he was manhandled, but the officials denied any such act. They claimed that he just not allowed boarding the aircraft.
Mr Akhilesh claimed that the officials couldn’t show him the papers of denial of permission. However, the incident drew thousands of SP workers at the airport, which according to the officials created ruckus, ensuing problems to travelers.
“I was prevented from boarding the airplane without any written orders. Currently detained at Lucknow Airport. It is clear how frightened the government is by the oath ceremony of a student leader. The BJP knows that youth of the country will not tolerate this injustice anymore,” the SP chief wrote on Twitter just after his detention.
However, reacting swiftly, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in his statement said, “SP should refrain from its anarchist activities. Allahabad University requested that Akhilesh Yadav’s visit may create law & order problem because of the dispute between student organisations. Hence the government took this step.”
The government also released the letter of the Allahabad University vice-chancellor (VC) who had written on Monday that no political leaders are allowed in any function of the University.
Due to the detention of the SP leader, both the Houses of the UP Legislature witnessed pandemonium and adjourned for the day.
BSP president Mayawati blamed the BJP for stopping Akhilesh through an ‘undemocratic’ way to Prayagraj.
In her tweet Mayawati questioned, “Is the BJP government at the Centre and in Uttar Pradesh so afraid of the BSP-SP alliance that it is resorting to anti-democratic methods in order to curb our political activities. This is very unfortunate and this undemocratic step will be fought at all levels.”
SP MLA Ujjawal Raman Singh alleged that the government was trying to prevent party president to attend the function of the Akhara Parishad mainly as they do not want him to join the felicitation programme where the saints would be honouring him for the success of the 2013 Kumbh.
