‘Aadhaar biometrics are safe, secure’

Amidst reports of alleged data breach of Aadhaar subscribers, Union Law and IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Thursday reiterated that fingerprint and Iris data stored in the Aadhaar system were safe and secure and cannot be breached.‘’They are kept in safe and encrypted form with desired technological back-up and cannot be breached at any cost by anybody,’’ he said.

Inaugurating the Sixth International Commerce Conference of Delhi School of Economics, organised by the Delhi University here, Mr Prasad said India’s digital ecosystem was very powerful, which also necessitated the stronger cyber security, cyber training and cyber coordination.India was soon going to be a powerful centre of low cost cyber security products, he added.

Outlining the importance of Digital India drive of the government, the IT Minister said Digital India is more for the poor and underprivileged, designed for empowering ordinary Indians and bridge the divide between the Digital haves and the Digital have nots.‘’Most importantly, Digital India aims at Digital Inclusion, which is the basic philosophy of India, which the world today has been appreciating,’’ Mr Prasad said.

Talking about the impact of digital marketing in the light of Digital India formation, he said with consumers becoming creators of their own content all the traditional norms of marketing will change.

‘’This is new manifestation of emerging India, wherein you need a platform, which is accessible, which has application, and which can be adopted; and Digital India is creating these opportunities.’’ Mr Prasad added.

Hailing the initiative of the Delhi University to start a separate department for Cyber Security courses, Mr Prasad said his government will extend all possible support to the varsity, in running the new department.

Delhi University Vice Chancellor Dr Yogesh K Tyagi, Delhi School of Economics Director Prof Pami Dua and Prof Kavita Sharma, Head & Dean, Department of Commerce, Delhi School of Economics, presented their views on the opening day of the two-day event.
