9 infants die at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital in 24 hours

Agencies, Ahmedabad

As many as 18 newborns died in past three days, including nine in past 24 hours, in Ahmedabad government hospital, which is among the largest medical institutes in Asia. The Gujarat government has constituted a committee to examine the causes and other aspects which will report in the next 24 hours.

Medical Superintendent M M Prabhakar of Civil Hospital, Ahmedabad told UNI that nine newborns have died in the past 24 hours. Five of these were brought in serious condition from Viramgam, Surendranagar, Mansa and Himmatnagar. Some of the children who died were under treatment for three days, he said, adding that efforts were being made to prevent such deaths.

‘’The ICU of the hospital’s newborn department where deaths occurred has 100 beds and has state-of-the-art resources. Many of the children who died, were suffering from low birth weight and other problems,’’ Dr Prabhakar said.

A three-member committee has been constituted under the chairmanship of Deputy Director of Medical Education, Raghav Dikshit for a thorough probe of every aspect including the cause of deaths. Nilesh Shah, currently the Dean of the inaugurated Medical College in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s hometown Vadnagar, and Himanshu Joshi, the Head of Department of Pediatric Disease Department, Gandhinagar Medical College, are the other members.

Sources said that the death of these children has been reported due to a type of infection (septicemia). It has been reported that five of the nine children who were killed in the past 24 hours were brought here from other districts in critical condition while four were born in this hospital. Some of them weighed only one to two kgs, which is much less than normal weight at two and a half kg.

On an average, there are four to five such deaths per day in the country’s largest newborn ICU hospital. Due to the decrease in the number of doctors in the private hospital due to vacations of Diwali and Gujarati New Year, the number of patients in these government hospitals have increased, they said.

The infant deaths in the poll-bound state have taken a political hue. Gujarat incharge of Opposition Congress Ashok Gehlot has tweeted, ‘’Death of children reported in another BJP ruled State Gujarat. My heart goes out to their parents n family members.May God gv them strength.’’

Congress State spokesperson Manish Doshi said that this incident has clearly shown completely failure of the BJP government in the health sector. He claimed that the number of unofficial infant dead is more than nine.
