Lucknow, Five people, including a woman and her infant, were burnt alive in a fire that engulfed two hotels near Charbagh railways station here, on Tuesday morning.
Around 15 others were injured, of which condition of two was stated to be critical with over 70 per cent burn injuries.
The fire broke out first at SSJ Hotel and spread to the adjoining Virat International in Naka police station area at around 0600 hrs.
Superintendent of Police (SP) West Vikash Chandra Tripathi has confirmed five deaths.
He said that while the mother and her child died on the spot, the remaining three succumbed to their injuries at a hospital. The identity of the deceased were yet to be known.
The SP said that the critically injured have been shifted to SIPS Superspecialty Hospital, Burn And Trauma Centre, while the other injured were admitted to different government hospitals in the state capital.
UP minister and local MLA Rita Bahuguna Joshi, who rushed to the spot, announced a magisterial probe into the incident. She said that the probe would be completed within a week and the guilty booked.
The Minister also ordered thorough checking of all the hotels near Charbagh station about their fire fighting devices.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed grief over the tragedy and directed the officials concerned to ensure all medical treatment to the injured.
SSP Deepak Kumar, who also rushed to the spot, claimed that more than 50 people were rescued from the building by the fire brigade sleuths.He said cause of fire still to be ascertained.” If we find any lapse on hotel’s part during our investigation, we will take strict action against those responsible,” he said.
Surprisingly, the hotel employees and the owners of the two hotels escaped from the scene after the incident.
Inspector General of Police (IG) Lucknow, Sujit Pandey also visited the spot to monitor the rescue and relief operations.
According to an eye-witness, the fire started from bar-cum restaurant of SSG Hotel with a big explosion and spread to Virat International.
