Central Chronicle had asked its readers:
Should Indians settle abroad?
Following are the responses:

Mansi Bhui: 'Janni Janmabhumisha Sargadapi Gariyasi Mata' means that our motherland is our real mother. As America is for Americans, Russia for Russians so is India for the Indians, the real motherland Bharat. But, why is the culture of 'BRAIN DRAIN' emerging so popularly in India? Brain drain is nothing but 'Human Capital Flight'. It is the emigration of trained and talented individuals to other nations due to conflicts, Lack of opportunities or health hazards where they live. This is not new for India. It first started in 1960 when a number of IIT graduates decided to move abroad and settle there. According to research it has been concluded that at the age of 20 people go there to study and at the age of 25 they decide whether to settle or not. But the question is why is it necessary to settle in abroad and contribute all our resources to other countries rather than our motherland. Why cant you give your loyal service to your own land where you are born, get education and enjoy the services provided to joy by your country. India is a developing country. We have a shortage of good resource in our country. In the present scenario India will provide a lot of opportunities to the talented mass. Then why to settle there? Even we see that Indians are so talented that the foreign countries hire them as quickly as possible. Settlement in abroad also has other demerits too. They forget the Indian culture and ethics once there. The real sufferers are budding kds who fully adopt the western culture. But there is a twist in the story. Our ex president Dr Abdul Kalam Azad gave the principal of 'Reverse Braindrain'. He believes that the logic of settlement in abroad will not continue longer as because within a few years migration will get stopped because of saturation and competition they will come back from where they have gone.

Shilpa Gupta: 'Ghar aaja pardeshi tera desh bulaye re'. I think now we can say this line and we know that NRIs are missing their motherland and so also their motherland is waiting for them. Now, in this scenario, we think that there is no scope for development in India and we have to go abroad for our own development. There is much opportunity for us. But, did we think as to how came till here? Had it not been for our education they they would not accept us? In our childhood we learnt that family is our first school of learning same as India, which is our motherland so, it is our first school for learning. It may be possible that there are many reasons that they are going just like growth of career, passion of achieving many things, gain more money, gain prestige in the society. All these things are right but we have to come back to our homeland and use our calibre for developing our country. There are also many opportunities for development here like we are developing in IT and many other fields.

Jaskaran Singh Dhami: What a question? Oh, my God!

Don't ask me to answer in prose,

Coz, I'm in a poetic mode.

Well! To this question, weird,

I give my vigorous nod.

We 'add on' at alarming rate,

Witlessly we churn out horde.

'Bharat' is bursting at seams,

Some load-shed it can afford.

Brain drain, but, is to be stopped,

'Downbeat' does it bode.

Our brain when goes the drain,

Our flights then surely plod.

Go for the greener pastures,

Never snap but umbilical cord.

Whole world is now a village,

Immaterial, where's abode.

Sushmita Shrivastava: There are a number of considerations that cannot be ignored while deciding about going abroad or settling there. First, no country is impeccable. Life is not easy in any country and there will be struggle even in rich advanced countries of the West. But what is most important is that only a person having the tact and knack to excel in foreign country should decide about leaving one's own country. The economies of Western countries, especially USA and UK, are also slowing down and the number of jobs there are diminishing.. The currencies of these countries are very strong but to earn there is equally difficult. A person having the required qualifications, skills as well as the permit to live and work can be successful there and not all. There are social and family considerations as well. Those who leave India for the first time initially feel homesick and miss the family and friends. But the emptiness in their life gets filled as they begin to earn gradually and make friends. In short there are both positive and negative points associated with settling in a foreign country.

SN Patra: Indians who get the opportunity to settle abroad may do so for their pleasure. The number of such voluntary individuals will be so small so as to cause any dent on us.

Once given to a life abroad these Indians working or living as citizens come to our country to acquire property, spend holidays or for getting medical/surgical treatment which they cannot afford there. Even nationals of other countries visit our country for these reasons.

In view of `Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' Indians should feel free to settle abroad. In due course, our ideas, culture and intelligence may, after all enrich people of other countries.

Subodh Shrivastava: Indians here implies mainly to the IT professionals who are migrating fast to alluring world and making it their second home. It also implies to those who go to other countries to make money and finally settle there.

Every Indian need to be patriotic. A person who is born in India, did his education in India, grew with love and affection of family and friends, developed his brain to compete with any of the talented people in the world, if thinks to settle abroad can only be a self-centred selfish man.

An alien countryman is treated as second grade personality in any country despite his contribution to that nation. Many countries have hatred towards Indians. An Indian going abroad can earn a lot of money and fame but not love. He has to be away from his beloved parents, friends and family. He misses them very much and then tries to show his love towards his country as an NRI (Non-resident Indian).

Home-sweet-home is lost. It is better to live in your own house by cleaning it and giving colours of your own choice using your brain.

RJ Khurana: Pray, why not? If Indians had not been adventurous they would not have gone seafaring or moving out of the country since times immemorial as they did. Thanks to them the influence of Indian culture and civilization in most of Southeast Asia is all-pervasive. They contributed liberally to the upliftment of these countries and in turn gained by interacting with them and learning from them. Now Indians should not hesitate to settle abroad in search of new frontiers of knowledge and wealth. Till now they have benefited a lot by this interaction and will continue to benefit. Get out to earn and learn. Movement of populations in search of better pastures is a natural phenomenon. It will never stop. Why should Indians lag behind.

Dr Visal A Khan: Academically and technically qualified experts and students emigrating to industrialized countries, it is estimated that nearly 2 million Indians emigrated to the US, Canada, UK and Australia till date. Also unskilled, semi-skilled and skilled labourers migrating to Middle East countries for undertaking blue collar jobs about 3.5 million Indian migrants live in Gulf countries, with most of them coming from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Punjab. Migration is a positive phenomenon and if regulated and managed properly can reap in benefits for both the sending and receiving regions. In Kerala, for example, emigration has recently led to a considerable reduction in unemployment. Remittances are the main benefit of international migration, providing scarce foreign exchange and scope for higher levels of savings and investments. The remittances of India's diaspora have over the past 30 years financed much of India's balance of trade deficit, have thus reduced the current account deficit and have even led to wealth and asset creation. Migration will be one of the major policy concerns of the twenty-first century. In our shrinking world, more and more people will look to migration, temporary or permanent - as a path to employment, education, freedom or other opportunities. Government will need to develop sound migration policies and practices, properly managed migration can contribute to prosperity, development and mutual understanding among people. India is lacking in planning to utilize skilled experts services for her development. Govt. Institutions in India invest average Rs. 3 lakhs per Engineer and Rs. 5 lakhs per doctor, but this investment go waste once the professional emigrates abroad.Plans to absorb our skilled experts for development of the our country still need attention so that Indians may stop settling abroad.

RK Kutty: Why not? But the reason behind asking this question is not understood. Is there any apprehension now to believe that settling abroad wouldn't be a viable option now in the changed scenario? Yes, the west is now looking eastward, the same way the east once looked westward. This is transition time and that was more than expected. It is the law of nature.

In this vast world, options are open for everyone to go in search of opportunities. Nobody knows exactly the migratory routes of humanity ever since that great deluge during Noah's days. The current generation settled in all the continents of the world is children originated from the descendants of Noah, the genealogy of whom can be traced back from the Book of Genesis Chapter 11.

During pre-independent times, the British ferried many Indians to work in their plantations/farms in their occupied colonies elsewhere and they are now NRIs. Their children have inherited position of natural citizens of that countries. Many of them have became Presidents, Prime Ministers, Ministers and other high dignitaries there. Indian businessman Swaraj Paul is now Lord Swaraj Paul in Britain. Steel King Lakshmi Mittal is reigning supreme in England, France and other European countries. The possibility of Bobby Jindal emerging as a strong contender for Vice President under the Republican Party in the US cannot be ruled out. He is already a Governor of one of the States. So what is the problem?

It is only we in India who still maintain a narrow mindset, opposing universalism, although ancient Sages, Rishies, Munies and our so called Vendanta propounded the theory of Vasu Daiva Kudumbakam. They have envisioned it and now we are experiencing it through these Globalization, Market economy etc. Soon, the world will emerge as a global village. If the people of each Indian States reserves the right to migrate and settle in any part of India, the people of each country/continents of the world also should have the same right to migrate and settle in any part of the world. As the world and its fullness is that of God Almighty. It is the will of that same God Almighty that His children should flourish and fill the whole earth. May that be so in the not too distant future?

Satish Singh: Perceptibly to settle abroad is not possible for every Indian. In India, one to five percent is only able to think about even going overseas. Thus the topic is not very pertinent. Well, there is no dispute concerning this perception.

As far as my opinion is concerned, I will never persuade any conception regarding settlement of Indians abroad.

Without a doubt, in foreign land, we will get improved surroundings and prospect for physical and intellectual development. But, it is not precise for us that we disregard obligation of our own country. Being a citizen of India, we must serve our nation first. Besides, at the moment, every kind of opportunity is in our country. In every sector, we are getting employment. Whether that is BPO or anything else like hardware, Software, traditional jobs, games and yoga. Entry of MNC is good way to endow with job. On job training is another way to enrich quality of knowledge and job skill of unemployed youths. Perhaps due to these reasons, students of IIMs are nowadays not preferring to go abroad for getting service. Students of IIMs are dropping the high paid jobs of out of the country. This is really good indication for everyone. Some students have started their business in India. Similarly some students have started social service. They associate themselves with some social organizations. At the same time, some students have started their own NGOs.

In the present circumstances, situation is not that bad. Era of economic crisis is over. We have enough foreign currency reserve. Neither trade deficit nor balance of payment problem is persisting. Undoubtedly inflation and price rise at the moment are troubling. This shocking phase will be over very soon.

Our five year plans have prepared good and robust foundation for growth. Our infrastructure is almost sound. Process of eradication of corruption, nonsense politics, and holiganism is also in full swing. After severe economic crisis of 1991-92, new-fangled state of affairs changed the way of Indian strategy on the topic of improvement. Now private sector is getting priority. The era of public sector has ended. Jobs are being provided by private sector on regular basis. Business tycoons like Tata, Birla, Ambani brothers, Mittal etc are investing a lot of money in infrastructure sector and along with this these players are furthermore providing employment to all kind of job seekers.
