Bedlam in Assembly as Oppn seek judicial probe into Indore riots

By Our Staff Reporter

Bhopal, July 8: An uproarious scene was witnessed in the State Assembly on the second consecutive day today with the leader of Opposition, Jamuna Devi and other leaders of her party sticking to their demand of a judicial probe into Indore riots.

As soon as proceedings of the Assembly commenced at 10.30 am on Tuesday with the Assembly Speaker Ishwar Das Rohani asking for the commencement of question hour, the leader of Opposition and senior Congress leader, Jamuna Devi stood from her seat, demanding a judicial probe into the recent communal violence in Indore which claimed the lives of six persons.

Jamuna said the state has been gripped by anarchy, the law and order situation in the state has virtually come to a naught, people are dying. Keeping these things in mind, the Chief Minister has no right to remain in the office, she said and demanded the latter's resignation in the wake of recent violence in Indore.

The leader of Opposition also demanded a judicial probe into all riots in the state. She said the appointment of the judge for judicial probe should be made in consent with her party. Though the Speaker asked Jamuna Devi to keep silent as there was no provision of such discussions during the question hour, the senior Congress leader continued raising her demand for the judicial probe, maintaining that she would not allow question hour unless and until her demands were accepted.

Subsequently, the Speaker suspended proceedings of the Assembly for an hour. However, as soon as the proceedings of the Assembly recommenced at 11.30 am, the Opposition were once again seen on their toes demanding a judicial probe into Indore violence. The Speaker said that he received 22 notices from the Assembly members with regard to Indore violence. He read a notice of a Congress MLA Arif Aquil regarding incidents of violence in Indore and elsewhere in the State.

In the meantime, former chief minister, Digvijay Singh stood from his seat asking the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to accept a discussion on Indore violence and order a judicial probe into it. He was also joined by other party leaders. But the Congress leaders' demands remained unheeded as no reply came either from the Chief Minister or from the Speaker. Not being able to get a reply, the Congress MLAs led by former chief minister Digvijay Singh and the leader of Opposition, Jamuna Devi stormed into the well of the Assembly and indulged in sloganeering against the ruling government for about half-an-hour. In retaliation, the BJP MLAs also shouted slogans against the Opposition party as well as the central government. Since numerical strength of the BJP MLAs was more as compared to the Congress and other Opposition MLAs, the whole House plunged into a din of sloganeering and counter-sloganeering.

In the meantime, Speaker Rohani hurried through the listed questions for the day and got it passed with voice vote before the Assembly was suspended for the day.
