Uproar in Assembly over Indore `riot'

By Our Staff Reporter

Bhopal, July 7: As expected, the first day of the monsoon session of Madhya Pradesh Assembly began here amidst noisy protests with entire Opposition condemning the Shivraj Singh Chouhan-led Bharatiya Janata Party Government for communal riots in Indore.

Amidst uproar, the Assembly was adjourned for the day after the Speaker Ishwar Das Rohani rushed through the listed official business in 20 minutes on Monday.

Later, the Opposition declared they would not allow a smooth run of the House "for the police attempt to murder Leader of the Opposition Jamuna Devi in front of Chief Minister's residence in Bhopal on Sunday and preventing former Chief Minister and All India Congress Committee general secretary Digvijay Singh and others from attending the session as they were detained in Indore".

The leaders also condemned the government for not preventing communal riots which rocked Indore during the July 3 'bandh call', called by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ally the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) against Shri Amarnath Shrine Board land controversy.

Six people were killed in the communal riots, while clashes continued unabated for three days despite curfew being imposed in the entire city.

Earlier, the monsoon session commenced with the rendering of "Vande Mataram", Speaker Ishwardas Rohani read out obituary reference paying glowing tributes to Field Marshal SHFJ Manekshaw, Gandhian Nirmala Deshpande and six others who died during the inter-session period. After observing two minute silence, the House was adjourned for five minutes as a mark of respect to the departed souls.

The five-day session would be the last of the state's 12th Vidhan Sabha as elections are scheduled this year.

Official sources said that preparations were complete for the session. Notices were received for 893 questions, 540 of them being starred questions. Besides, 152 call attention notices, 23 adjournment notices, 18 private members' bills and 39 zero hour notices were received. About half-a-dozen key bills are likely to be presented.
