Indore tense, but under control

Chronicle News Service

Indore, July 5: Normal life continued to remain affected in the curfew-bound Indore city on Saturday, a day after escalated communal violence over the Amarnath shrine row which left two more people killed taking the death toll in the commercial capital of Madhya Pradesh to six.

The city of Indore which is known for its vibrancy and resilience, stood still on Saturday and wore a deserted look with all the government, private and business establishments remaining close, barring few hours in the evening when the district administration announced a relaxation of three hours (from 4 pm to 7 pm) in the evening in as many 11 police station areas of the city.

Indore collector, Rakesh Shrivastav talking to this newspaper, said the district administration would think of further relaxation in curfew on Sunday, only after assessing the law and order position in the city on Saturday night. He described the situation in the city as `tense but under control'

The district administration had imposed an curfew in the entire city on Friday afternoon, after reports of sporadic violence in many parts of the city. Two more people died on Friday when the police opened fire on an irate mob in Juna Risala locality.

According to the police, cases have been registered against three cops accused of shooting two people to death on Friday.

Confirming this, Indore range IG, Anil Kumar said that allegation of the community people about the police shoot-out will be thoroughly probed after normalcy returns in the city. According to report, the people of a particular community had refused to take the bodies of the deceased who were killed in police firing on Friday, unless and until murder cases were registered against the cops accused of shooting.

At least 140 people have been arrested in the strife torn city where an indefinite curfew was imposed on Friday following widespread violence that forced the police to open fire and lob tear-gas shells on rioters at several places.

Four people were killed on Thursday as the shutdown called by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) took a communal turn, prompting the administration to clamp curfew on few places in the city, which was extended later to the entire city.
