19 killed, 29 injured in bus accident

Dehradun, July 3: Nineteen people were killed and 29 injured Thursday when the bus they were travelling in rammed into a tree at Gadappu area of Nainital district.

The bus carrying 48 passengers was going to Kashipur from Haldwani when a front tyre of the vehicle burst and it hit a tree, senior Superintendent of Police (Nainital) G S Mortolia said, adding that the impact of the collision was so high that bus broke into two pieces.

While 15 people were killed on the spot, four others succumbed to injuries at the hospital, he said.

The condition of some of the injured is stated to be critical.

Yesterday, 13 people were killed and 29 injured when a bus in which they were travelling fell into the swollen Bhagirathi River in Uttarkashi district.

Nearly 300 people have so far been killed and more than 500 people injured this year in road accidents in different parts of the hill state.
