Seminar on safety management in industry begins

Bhopal, May 26: A five-day seminar on safety management in industry for HSE officers, organised by the Institute of Industrial Management (IIMSHE), was inaugurated on Monday by the Regional Director of IGNOU Prof KS Tiwari, at the Institute's conference hall, MP Nagar Zone II. The programme was presided over by RK Soni Joint Director IH&S.

In his inaugural address Prof Tiwari appreciated the effort of IIMSHE for equipping officers with relevant technical upgrade. The IIMSHE and IGNOU has joined hand to extend more courses of such nature for the enhancement of employees at work, he added.

He said that ``our technical and analytical background ensures an efficient system at the lowest possible cost. Our knowledge and experience of the importance of human and organisational factors help us to identify the need for extra effort by management, organisational innovations, safety awareness campaigns, education and training.''

In his presidential address, RK Soni, expressed that the employees have to maintain an appropriate level of safety for human beings with focus on the environment and capital assets at works. ``Our technical and analytical background ensures an efficient system at the lowest possible cost'', he added.

Dr SA Pillai, Director, IIMSHE, informed that in most countries companies are required by law to be in control of safety and to be properly prepared for dealing with serious incidents at workplace. Safety management, however, is also part of any company's strategic risk management to minimise losses. IIMSHE today established short term courses for safety management for all types of companies including those with major accident potential.

PK Goyal AGM, BHEL stressed the need for HSE and said formal safety management system may include elements that address risks identified during a risk analysis and their technical and operational causes. The criteria used in the safety evaluation and for workplace assessments are built into the system to ensure that they are fulfilled under all operating conditions.
