New Delhi, May 24:
The BSF, guarding the country's international border with Pakistan and Bangladesh, will get more teeth with the Centre on Saturday promising all assistance for modernisation of the force.
The assurance was given by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil at the BSF Investiture ceremony here.
Besides promising all help for modernisation of the BSF, he said the number of personnel would increased and that the border guarding force would be armed with modern and hi-tech equipment.
Patil said the BSF personnel would be given better training to keep pace with the changing times when militants have started using new weapons and new technology.
He assured the personnel of taking adequate steps to improve the quality of their lives both in and out of service.
Referring to the objections raised by para-military forces to the recommendation of the Sixth Pay Commission, he said the government would take into consideration the interest and concerns while implementing the report. A committee has already been set up to go into the anomalies, he said.
"I have being told that with the new pay Commission report, the equation between various arms of the government especially the paramilitary and Defence forces have gone haywire," he said.
The Home Minister gave away 20 Police medals for Gallantry, including three Posthumous, and the United Nations Peace Keeping Medal to late Head Constable Khet Pal Singh.
He gave away 27 Police medals for Meritorious Service to J B S Negi, Inspector General(Ops) FHQ and Sanjay Kundu, DIG, Sector Headquarter, Srinagar, among others.
Meanwhile, the Home Minister chose not to speak to the media who wanted to question the minister about his controversial remark on the Sarabjit hanging issue.
