K'taka, TN liquor tragedy: Govt safeguards wanting

Liquor is supposed to bring solace to the people after their day's hard work but at times its consumption brings with it a trail of death and devastation too as is being witnessed in the southern state of Karnataka. The death toll due to consumption of the illegal brew in different parts of Karnataka and in some regions of Tamil Nadu has touched 156. The death drama started three days back. The authorities are continuing with their crackdown on bootlegging. In Bangalore city, six more persons, admitted in hospital, died. The illicit brew has claimed 115 lives in Karnataka--56 in Bangalore city, 32 in Kolar and 27 in Bangalore rural. Eight police personnel, including two sub-inspectors, have been placed under suspension in the wake of the fresh incident at Malur. In Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri district bordering Karnataka, the toll there mounted to 41 on Wednesday. Four police officials have been placed under suspension there. Karnataka excise personnel, who continued their search for illicit liquor, found a number of sachets dumped in a well in Cox Town area in Bangalore. "Twenty sachets have been taken out. Efforts are on to remove the other sachets", Excise Commissioner Chikkamath said. It is time for the Union and the State governments to frame a stringent policy for manufacturing country liquor. In this respect not much headway has been made even though a large number of people have died after consuming spurious liquor in different states.
