Student union polls: Lingdoh recommendations welcome

The State government, in context to the student union elections, has decided to follow the recommendations of the Lingdoh committee, constituted for the purpose. From the next session, elections for student bodies would not be held either directly or indirectly way. Now, the election of every office-bearer of the student body would be held as per merit. This would ensure peace in the campus enabling to improve the educational standards also. Due to unnecessary interference by the political parties and anti-social elements, an atmosphere of fear is created in the colleges during election times. The new recommendations on holding of student union polls would put an end to such lawlessness in the campuses. The move of the state government should be welcomed by one and all. The role of student union is like a bridge between the administration, the University and the college. Student welfare activities are carried out through student bodies however the entry of politics and students not interested in studies in these bodies, creates a situation of anarchy. It may be pointed out that the parents/guardians of students shell out a huge sum of money for proper education of their wards. The new system of college student elections would bring much-needed relief to them. Also, it is not true that the new system would not develop the personality of student leaders.
