Dhawan, Gambhir lead Delhi to 194/4

Agencies

New Delhi, May 15: A century stand between Gautam Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan for the second wicket helped Delhi Daredevils put up 194 runs for the loss of 4 wickets on the board of their allotted 20 overs. It was Gambhir who led the charge with a swashbuckling 79 at the top after Sehwag’s early dismissal. Dhawan finished off the innings in style as he paired with Maharoof and Dilshan to keep the scorecard ticking.

Earlier, Farveez Maharoof hit a couple of huge sixes before skiing a ball straight into the hands of Rohit Sharma. The breakthrough came a little too late for the Deccan Chargers as Delhi look to be heading toward a huge total with 171 runs on board and 2 overs still to go.

Gautam Gambhir departed after hitting a breezy 79 off just 48 balls, giving Deccan just a glimpse of hope to come back in the match. Gambhir was out stumped by Gilchrist off the bowling of Ojha.

Gambhir continued his golden run with the bat in the Indian Premier League as he smashed a well deserved half century to help Delhi take charge of the game. Delhi crossed the hundred run mark in the 13th over with Gambhir and Shikhar Dhawan putting up an unbeaten century partnership.

Delhi Daredevils received an early blow in their innings as they lost the wicket of skipper Virender Sehwag in the first over of the match. Sehwag, who failed to open his account was out caught at third man as he slashed at a ball outside off stump.

Deccan Chargers skipper Adam Gilchrist won the toss and decided to field first in the 37th match of the Indian Premier League being played here at the Firozshah Kotla stadium.

This will be a clash between two teams, both struggling with their form. While the Deccan Chargers are languishing at seventh spot with just two wins in nine matches, the Delhi Daredevils lost their last four matches. Delhi are still very much in the run for a semi-final spot while the Chargers captain Adam Gilchrist himself admitted that his side is out of the running in their quest for a Top 4 place.
