Bhopal, May 14:
The cabinet at its meeting chaired by the Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan here today decided to do away with the condition of ten percent public co-operation (contribution) for implementation of rural piped water or spot water supply schemes.
The works pertaining to water supply schemes in rural areas are carried out by Public Health Engineering Department under central government's Accelerated Rural Water Supply Programme. The cost of general water supply schemes under the programme is equally shared by the central and governments.
Earlier, as per the policy released by Public Health Engineering Department directives were issued for panchayats to collect 10 percent of the cost of piped water schemes by way of public contribution. Subsequently, directives were issued that the donation of labour or water conservation works done by villagers would be evaluated and adjusted against 10 percent contribution as public donation. Even after this, it was found difficult to obtain 10 percent public donation. Later, the cabinet extended it for another year.
Even then difficulty was experienced in obtaining 10 percent cost of these schemes by way of public contribution causing hurdles in their implementation. Hence the decision.
